The department's head and neck surgery fellowship was established with a generous gift by Mr. Bryan Hemming of San Francisco in honor of his physician, Mark I. Singer, MD.

Operative Experience: Fellow will participate in head and neck surgery and skull base surgery with David W. Eisele, MD, Lisa A. Orloff, MD, Steven J. Wang, MD and Ivan El-Sayed, MD. The fellow acts as attending surgeon in educating Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residents, as well as directly with attendings in the OR. Surgical experience includes an average of 4-5 major cases weekly, including tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, parotid, thyroid, paranasal sinuses and skull base, and neck. Reconstructive surgery, including microvascular free flap surgery, is usually within the service. Microvascular free flaps (about 30-50/year) are also done with the Plastic Surgery service. Skull base surgery is frequently done in concert with Neurosurgery.
Outpatient Experience: Fellow will work with the head and neck attendings and their patients, have responsibility for his or her own cancer patients, and actively participate in weekly tumor board, which discusses an average of 8-10 new patients weekly. The fellow will oversee a fellow-run clinic as well. There will be the opportunity to follow selected patients through their non-operative treatment as well, with Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. In addition, the fellow has teaching responsibilities associated with Journal Club, the head and neck dissection course, and departmental grand rounds.
Research: Clinical research is expected. Opportunities to interact with the Oral Cancer / Head and Neck Oncology basic science research arm of the Cancer Center also exist and are encouraged.
Call Responsibilities: Call 1 week every 10-12 weeks: 5 weeks/year. Privileges also at San Francisco General Hospital and Veterans Administration Medical Center to facilitate call.
Qualifications: OHNS Surgical Residency in an approved USA center, or equivalent training outside the USA; Ablilty to obtain California Medical License.
