Operative Experience: The fellow will have exposure to a wide variety of complex cases including airway endoscopy and airway reconstruction procedures, choanal atresia procedures, chronic ear surgery, cochlear implantation, endoscopic sinus surgery, and surgery for congenital and acquired neck masses. The fellow will be expected to take on a teaching role with junior residents for more straightforward surgical procedures such as tonsillectomy and tympanostomy tube placement.
Outpatient Experience: The fellow will be the chief of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Service at the UCSF Children’s Hospital Parnassus campus responsible for daily rounds, as well as the chief of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Consult Service at the UCSF Children’s Hospital Parnassus campus. The fellow will run his or her own outpatient clinics with the majority of these being in parallel with the Pediatric Otolaryngology Attending’s own clinics. Special attention will be given to the use of flexible nasopharyngoscopy in the diagnosis of airway pathology. The fellow will also be expected to participate in teaching in the outpatient setting of medical students and residents from Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, and Family Practice and will participate in the multi-disciplinary Craniofacial and Vascular Anomalies Clinics.
In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to spend time with other Pediatric Subspecialists as desired including pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric radiology, pediatric pulmonology, pediatric oncology, pediatric or neonatal intensive care, or pediatric infectious disease.
Research: The fellow will be expected to participate in a research project resulting in presentation at a local or preferably, national meeting along with publication of this work in a peer-reviewed journal. Fellows will have resources available from the UCSF Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Outcomes Research Center. This scholarly work may also include development of a new curriculum or clinical program.
Call Responsibilities: Call 1 week every 10-12 weeks: 5 weeks/year. Privileges also at San Francisco General Hospital and Veterans Administration Medical Center to facilitate call.
Qualifications: OHNS Surgical Residency in an approved USA center, or equivalent training outside the USA; Ablilty to obtain California Medical License.
